Our young people face more pressures today than ever before. It comes from several angles – school expectations, social and family challenges and the ever-present influence of social media. Anxiety among children and teenagers is at an all-time high. Recent NHS statistics show that more than 500 children a day, just in England, are being referred to mental health services for anxiety, which is double pre-pandemic levels.
In addition, widespread cuts to special educational needs (SEN) budgets in schools mean that many young people don’t receive the support they need. What can we do to try and stem this tide? One helping hand in these times is coaching, and I am seeing parents turning to youth coaching as an effective way to help their children.
